The functional assessment of sportspeople

Functional assessment is an essential tool at the service of the sports trainer to manage the development of sports performance and essential at the service of the rehabilitator for analysing the progression of the rehabilitation pathway and for injury prevention. Functional assessment describes the state and evolution of the factors predisposing performance. It is essentially a method of collecting and interpreting information and data useful for assessing the physiological condition and functional capacity of a person at a given time.
given moment.

The data collected, which are objective and comparable, allow decisions to be made on the training and development of a sporting activity or on rehabilitation interventions. Specifically, in the case of an athlete, the functional assessment, in addition to helping to understand the performance gaps to be improved, makes it possible to map motor functions when 'healthy' and thus to have a parameter for comparison in the event of an injury. Periodic tests compared with this data guide the eventual rehabilitation work and return to the field, thus avoiding relapses or unnecessary risks. Functional assessment tests measure the level of various motor skills such as joint mobility, fluidity and symmetry of movement, strength, power, quickness and endurance. In the Fisio&lab Test Room, in addition to isokinetic and isoinertial tests, we have also adopted Microgate analysis technology (Optogait, OptoJump, Gyco) and designed a test programme to assess explosive strength, acceleration, reactivity, gait and running analysis, and joint and muscle assessment. The Witty system, a system designed to plan and manage work on reactivity, agility and cognitive-motor skills, also allows cognitive and neuromotor training to expand performance capabilities in many applications on different sports and even pathological patients. The choice of an innovative technology should always be associated with the experience of the rehabilitator; subjective evaluation and experience are essential to read and understand the data. At Fisio&lab, the team, thanks to a profound knowledge of human physiology and technical gestures, is able to evaluate and interpret this data, managing it effectively and targeted to the patient's needs.
