Practical Tips for Safe Swimming in the Summer

As temperatures rise, outdoor swim sessions can become exhausting. While summer swimming is one of the most enjoyable experiences of the year, extreme heat can test even the most seasoned swimmer. Here are some key strategies to stay at your best, protect your health, and adapt to challenging weather conditions.

Stay hydrated before, during, and after training
Fluid loss happens even in water—especially during long or intense workouts. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Always bring cold water or electrolyte drinks, especially in double training sessions or humid environments.
Tech tip: Use low-sugar isotonic drinks. You can also add electrolyte powders to your
water bottle for better muscle recovery.

Wear UV-filter goggles: clear vision under the sun
Sun glare on water can disorient swimmers and even affect side breathing. Polarized or mirrored lenses reduce glare and improve visibility—essential in outdoor events.

Limit sun exposure between races
Avoid long periods in direct sun during competitions. Stay in the shade or bring a tent, umbrella, or thermal towel to keep your body cool.
Recommendation: Overexposure increases heat fatigue, reducing efficiency in technical phases like turns or starts.

Don’t underestimate sunscreen
Even in water, UV rays affect your skin. Use water- and sweat-resistant sunscreen, applied at least 20 minutes before entering the pool.

Stay active with regular mini-warmups.During long meets or training days, it’s common to sit for hours. Do short warm-up sessions or hop into the water occasionally to stay active. Useful strategy: If there’s no warm-up pool, walk or do dynamic stretches in the shade to help regulate body temperature.

Training in the heat improves long-term performance
Swimming in heat isn’t just a challenge—it’s an opportunity. Heat adaptation improves cardiovascular efficiency and prepares the body for tropical race conditions.

Fun fact: Studies show that heat training increases plasma volume and enhances the body’s ability to release heat, crucial for endurance events.
