In swimming — whether in pool, open water or triathlon — your mind doesn’t just accompany you: it drives you. Renowned psychologist Carol Dweck demonstrated that there are two ways of thinking: the fixed mindset, which believes talent is innate, and the growth mindset, which sees effort as a path to constant improvement. Those who develop the latter transform setbacks into learning, and that change elevates performance.

For example, Nick Sloman, an open-water swimmer who qualified for the Olympic 10 km, says: “I’m not particularly talented… it took me 12 years to get here.” After missing out on Tokyo, he worked with a psychologist, strengthened his confidence, and is now an international medallist. His story shows success comes from training the mind as much as the body.

Another iconic case is Mark Allen, Ironman Kona legend. He lost six times before winning, and in 1995 he was 14 minutes behind after the cycling leg. At that critical moment, instead of giving up, he focused on gaining “an inch at a time”, asking himself: “What can I do right now?”. That step-by-step mindset earned him his sixth title.

So, how can you train that winning mindset in your daily routine? Here are some ideas inspired by the greats:

Visualize the complete scenario: close your eyes and imagine every detail — the pool start, the waves, a flawless transition — to prepare your mind for any unexpected event.

Face the tough moments: if you feel stuck at a certain part of the course, visualize that moment and mentally rehearse how you’ll react with calm and strength.

Use affirmations and mantras: phrases like “I am ready,” “one stroke at a time,” or “I’ve already imagined this” anchor your focus and reduce stress under pressure.

Practice simulations: train in challenging conditions (low visibility, waves) and mentally prepare for possible hiccups (fogged goggles, crowded group). This builds your confidence.

Set up a pre-race ritual: breathe mindfully for one minute, repeat a motivating phrase, and visualize the start. This mental anchor centers you before every stroke.

Record your learning: at the end, write down what went well and what you’ll improve. This reflection develops a mindset of continuous improvement.

👉 Are you a coach and want to train your athletes’ minds too?
Join the 2FLOW Coach Program and discover how to enhance your athletes’ performance.
Sign up now for free early access to the new app: [Click here]

Are you a swimmer or athlete?
