There are moments, in a race that matters, in which the body arrives before the mind.
Your heart races for an instant before your head understands why. Your breathing tightens as your arms continue to push.
It's a second that any elite athlete knows, and which is usually portrayed as the enemy to be kept at bay.
But that second doesn't say anything in itself. It only says something when combined with what the athlete places next to it.
A recent study of elite athletes shows something that has always been intuited in the field but is rarely precisely named.
Those who carry with them an original calling to their sport—not the motivation tied to today's outcome but something more ancient and less negotiable—experience physiological activation under pressure differently than those who have lost that calling or have never recognized it.
The same rapid heartbeat. The same shallow breathing.
In one case, they become information. In the other, they become a threat.
It's not a difference in how strong the anxiety is. It's a difference in the meaning that anxiety receives the moment it arrives.
And here the discourse meets flow, which is too often described as a state without activation, almost a calm.
It is not so.
Flow is the ability to stay within the gesture while the activation is present, not its absence.
When the recall holds, the athlete's attention remains on the water, on the field, on the next move.
When the reminder is missing, attention shifts from the gesture to the threat, the possible failure, and what will happen next.
And it is exactly in that shift that the flow breaks.
This means that mental work with an elite athlete should not aim to reduce activation.
Reducing it is often impossible, and in any case that is not the point.
The real work is teaching the body to read that activation as a useful signal rather than an alarm, right when it arrives, not afterward, not with a cool head in a locker room.
It's interoceptive work, not motivational.
And this is why tools like EEG biofeedback make sense in this field, not as a technology added to training but as a mirror that makes visible, and therefore trainable, a process that would otherwise remain invisible to the athlete himself while it occurs.
A cross-cutting thought, to conclude.
What you see in an elite athlete by reading their heart rate during a race, you see in a kid much earlier, and in a simpler form: that is, in the very fact that there is someone ready to return to the pool the day after a lost race, without anyone having to convince them.
It's the same reminder, read at two different ages.
